I am a major fan of classic fantasy literature, but I gave up reading Stapledon years ago, when I realized that he was - in JCW's memorable phrase - a "Soviet butt-monkey".
How C. S. Lewis managed to read - and even enjoy - Stapledon is beyond me. Maybe he held the book with tongs or asbestos oven mitts, while wearing protective goggles and a gas mask?
