The fact is, no one (nor any society) is ever rich enough to choose to be stupid. To choose to be stupid is to be foolish, it is to lie to oneself about reality. And reality always wins.
The "we're rich enough to be stupid" mindset is similar (but not identical) to that which feebly objects to uncontrolled growth of government, and concomitant withering of our liberties, on the grounds that "we can't afford that given the current recession."
