Civilization, in every generation, must be defended from barbarians. The barbarians outside the gate, the barbarians inside the gate, and the barbarian in the mirror...

Former commie and angry hedonist, now a conservative Catholic Republican. After Scientific Materialism, Deism, and Buddhism, I stumbled across the 2,000-year-old Big Kahuna, the Roman Catholic Church. A couple of years before I became Catholic, exposure to the real world had replaced my Berkeley-induced leftism with a sort of sneering "I'm above it all" irony. After becoming Catholic in 1996, I turned conservative, and also became a much nicer guy. Eternal Optimism had won out over Radical Bitterness. Politics, current events, religion, and aviation, that's what's on the blog.

The Parallels Are Uncanny

Succinct letter to the editor in response to this WSJ article:

No Vietnam Quagmire.
Art Fougner - Flushing, N.Y.

Iraq is just like Vietnam except: We occupy Hanoi. We've captured Ho Chi Minh. The North Vietnamese have just held a free and democratic election. The North Vietnamese are working on a new constitution. Yes, Iraq is just like Vietnam.

And there aren't two hostile nuclear powers supplying weapons and other supplies to the hostiles.

There are parallels, though. Now, as then, there are a bunch of academic and media airheads attacking the Administration ceaselessly. And the Gummint, instead of rallying the country, is doing little to make the public understand we are in a war, and sacrifice, courage and discipline are in order.

And due to the Gummint not doing enough to rally the country, many people answer "no" when a pollster asks them if they approve of Bush's handling of the war. Which causes the liberals to interpret this as a peacenik sentiment (funny that the poll questions never try to break down the reasons people say they disapprove. I guess they just don't want to know). Which causes the liberals to pour themselves another generous cup of political Kool-Aid. Ah, well.
