Prior to the Tamron lens, I'd been using a Nikon 18-200mm VR, which tends to have edgy, distracting bokeh (and while a whole lot better than the D40's kit lens, falls well short of an "artistic" lens, IMHO).

How's the bokeh on this lens?
I assume you're referring to the Tamron in the above post. Bokeh is very smooth and creamy. You can see a bit in this photo:
